Heart of The City Festival
With over 80 events at over 25 venues, The Heart of The City Festival is not to be missed. I was approached by Vancouver Moving Theatre to work on their behalf as festival photographer. Having already been involved with their earlier production, Storyweaving, I knew I was in for a real treat.
Given the wide range of events at the festival, I found myself shooting under every conceivable condition. From sunshine to rain, daylight to nearly no light, each performance forced me to adapt quickly to my conditions. I really enjoy working in a wide variety of locations and the strict no-flash rule of theatre work forces me to work with any available light. The outcome can sometimes be hit or miss. People often stray into frame, the lighting can change at any moment and I kept running into the same LED washer lights that cast a pretty nasty, cold blue over everything. However, I wouldn’t change anything about my experience this year. Vancouver Moving Theatre do great work in the Downtown Eastside and it was an honour to be involved. Here’s to 2013 and the upcoming 10th Anniversary of the Heart of The City Festival.
